History & Origin
The Selkirk Rex's story began in Montana, USA, in 1987, with a single, extraordinary kitten born in an otherwise normal litter. This founding cat, named Miss DePesto, possessed a unique genetic mutation that gave her a coat of loose, plush curls, including her whiskers. A Persian breeder recognized her uniqueness and, through careful outcrossing with Persians, Exotic Shorthairs, and British Shorthairs, developed the breed we know today. Named after the Selkirk Mountains, this breed is distinct from other Rex types like the Devon and Cornish Rex, as it has a coat of normal density and length—it's just delightfully curled.
Physical Characteristics
The Selkirk Rex is a medium-to-large, solidly built cat, weighing between 3 to 7 kg. Their most defining feature is, of course, their coat. Unlike other Rex breeds, the Selkirk has a full, medium-length coat that forms random, loose curls and waves, giving them a charmingly rumpled, 'just-out-of-bed' appearance. This curl extends to their whiskers and eyebrows. They come in all possible colors and patterns, with eye colors ranging from gold and copper to green and blue. Their round eyes and sweet expression complete their teddy-bear look.
